It looks like RockAuto has a gasket for the front differential.

They probably do, but I had a hard time getting to the top bolts to torque them down properly. It's certainly snug, and may be good enough for a good seal...

I was just wondering if you went by the manual or just filled until the oil came out. Before I took the cover off I removed the plug and noticed it was draining already, so I figured the last person went by the manual, which seems like the standard way to go.

BTW - I used the Permatex Gear Oil RTV stuff, which is gray. The stuff I used on my Jeep was black. This gray stuff dries slower then the black stuff.

I went by whatever the post said that someone created.

I'm reading that the 8.25 rear end actually holds too little oil and I remember filling mine up just below the hole. I think I might park on an incline so I can get a bit more oil in the rear. As for my front diff I used the black stuff but you'll be fine with the grey.

OK, I figure the FSM is right most of the time.

I was thinking of using some duct tape to cover the bottom half of the plug opening so I can fill it all the way, then remove the tape and quickly put the plug back in.

Yeah, I've always used the black, but the grey is for the diff so it's good. It just takes a lot longer to dry then the black - which is OK as I don't need to drive the truck any time soon.

I usually just use my thumb for this. It's much easier.

I just sucked the lube out of my front assembly and pumped new in, much easier than fighting the probs. Has to be better than not doing anything. I would say I got 95% out and replaced it. I have an old gear lube bottle from years ago that I saved, makes this much easier. I bent a piece of copper tubing and attached it to the hose on the bottle and it went down to the bottom of the gear assembly to suck it out. : )

Maybe the rear, but I'm thinking I'm going to need 3 hands to do the front.

If I ever decide to do the front again I'll suck it out too.

When I did my rear Diff I was short 1/2 a quart the store only had two bottles because of that my rear made a mild noise till I filled it up I parked with the passenger side higher so I could pump more than the recommended amount past the fill hole and its been quiet after that I almost put the full quart in.

Been great the last year very quiet

I recommend pulling the cover every 5 years to check things out and check the magnet for chips

I looked for the magnet in the front, but didn't find it.
