Default 2004 V6 tune up gave reduced fuel economy

so got my truck in May w/90 k miles on it and drove it 5000 miles on the highway during the summer and averaged a steady 20 mpg, truck ran great.

It was by then apparent to me that the only thing that had ever been done to it was oil changes. So I did a lot of regular maintenance and finished off with a tune-up - plugs (same as factory), air cleaner element and EGR valve. The plugs looked original, no electrodes left and lots of rust, gapped the new ones as per specs, this was more than twice what the worn plugs were running at. Truck still runs great.

Haven't driven it much until a (1000 miles - two fill-ups) road trip last weekend and I am now getting 17.5 - 18 mpg hwy!

Any ideas? did I goof something up? Do I need to check the timing?

Al

sorry, plugs were gapped and this was "less than half" what the worn plugs were running at

Did you pull the Neg battery terminal off for 15 minutes to reset the computer?

Are you using E10?

Do they use a "Winter Grade" fuel where you live? Both will knock out the MPG's.
