Default Towing with a 3.9

I have a 2wd 3.9 and I will be running 4.10 gears with 33's by summer and I want to get an enclosed trailor for sleeping and hauling the dirtbikes. Ive towed a 12 foot open trailor before with 3 full size dirtbikes and it pulled just fine with stock gears and 31's. stopping was the challenge. had to pump the brakes a bit. I want a 6x10 enclosed trailor with single axle and no brakes on it.
I wanna know some thoughts on this. I need help deciding what to go with.

the 4.10's will make it no problem in my opinion.

Either upgrade your brakes, get discs in the back, or use a trailer with brakes to improve the stopping.

4.10's will make it cake.

Get a trailer with brakes and be done. Remember, dakota's were hardly built to stop themselves, hauling/towing was a bit of an afterthought in that regard....

yeah the brakes on these trucks are already junk. I was thinking electric breaks on the trailor. some places sell them and throw em on the trailor for you.

it's a good idea. Hardest part is wiring the controller- some trucks are pre-wired, some aren't. Then fitting it somewhere you bang your knee on it at.

How do you check which gears you have?

I have a complete 8.25" rear end with an Auburn Posi and 4.10 gears that I'll make you a screaming deal on. And unless you're in San Jose, Costa Rica or something, I'm close enough that you can pick it up. (Sorry for the shameless plug.)

Regardless of what gears you run, you should probably put brakes on the trailer if you tow it behind a Dakota. It's a weight thing, not braking power. No matter how well your brakes work, you're not going to stop very fast if the truck is skidding.

Check the paper in glove box to see what gears you have.

As far as towing. Anything over 2k on the dakota should use trailer brakes. Its cheap insurance and trust me you and your truck will love it when it comes to an emergency situation. You dont have to worry about your driving its the other A holes around you.

Checked mine 3.55 ratio with anti spin rear diff. Has the 4.7 and still has problems staying in 5th gear when there's a slight incline when towing

To check your gears Id also recommend reading the tag on one of the cover bolts on the differential or better yet straight of the ring.

My buildsheet says 3.55 gears but my glovebox says 3.92. Tag reads 3.92 too. So my buildsheet is wrong.
