5.2L Swap to a 3.9L
Hello friends, I just joined your forum but have visited as a guest a few times, I find your forum very informative and a great bunch of folks that dont pretend to know everything.
So I have Three dakota's, a 2000 4x4 3.9 auto extended cab, I just bought a 2003 4x4 5.2 standard extended cab, and a 1997-98 4x4 with 3.9 auto extended cab. The one I just bought had bad heads, the guy took them off last fall and left the engine out in the elements of our great Northern Ontario Canada winters, he had the hood closed and that was the only protection it had, so I was hoping to put the 3.9 out of my 97-98, it only has 100000 kms or 60000 miles, it runs like the day it rolled off the floor, my 2000 has had one problem ever since new, the coil failed but amazingly enough it still brought me home. I would like to know if its a hard job and is it very expensive to do, the 3.9 in my truck has great power, good fuel milage and is just a very dependable engine. So if anyone has some info or knows of a web site that talks about it, I would be greatful, once aqgain, thanks for welcoming me to your forum and hope one day I to can pass along some help or tips! thanks Aaron

Yeah I'm confused as well. As DakDan stated, the 5.2 was not available in 2003. Judging by the fact you said it's 4wd, that tells me it's not a R/T either. So it's either not a 2003 or it's a 4.7 V8. If it is a 4.7 V8, then the swap is a little more difficult. The 3.9 and 4.7 are entirely different engines. Different transmission bell housings, different computer, different mounts. Not to say it can't be done, but it is more of a process than swapping a 5.2 V8 for a 3.9 V8.
Not sure I've ever seen a post about swapping a 5.2 for 3.9 lol.

Sorry guys its my mistake, its a 4.7L, I just had another look under the hood, I new it was a V8 and looking it up online before checking under the hood, I guess I will buy one from the wreckers and install that one. The truck is in amazing shape and to good to part out or scrap, thanks for the info guys.
