Default Another 42RE Problem - FSM lookup request

I've got yet another tranny problem.

42RE, 3.9, 4x4, 57,000 kms.

I know that the 3.9 lacks power so when it comes to passing on the highway its definitely a pain in the ***.

Today I noticed that when cruising in over drive I could not get it to shift back down into 3rd without braking.

I wanted to pass a few vehicles a number of times and I would put my foot to the floor and it refused to downshift into 3rd to get a little more "umph", it just lazily stays in OD and it takes me forever to get up to speed.

Does anyone have a FSM that they could look up these symptoms for me, or does anyone know what might be happening?

My 42RE is garbage and its such a low mileage truck. OD seems to slam into gear and now I cant get it to buck back down to 3rd to pass.

Thanks in advance.

In my Haynes manual it says:

Problem:
Transmission will not downshift with accelerator pedal pressed to the floor

Solution:
Throttle Valve cable misadjusted

Try starting with that?

The TB valve doesn't affect the OD unit, it's fully electronic, and the PCM turns it on or off based on vacuum and TPS voltage I believe.

Thank you both.

Magnet, do you happen to know if there is an entry for a clunk into OD? Maybe I can try to narrow my problem down if they are some how related.

I appreciate it!

as far as i know, a small clunk into 4th is normal as the OD unit is energized. mine does, at least.

Yeah I've read that in a few places, but mine will sometimes hesitate and then clunk into OD - definitely think something is up.

Once its in OD I drive fine until I want to pass someone and then it wont drop down to 3rd.

No codes either - my truck never throws codes despite having 5 things wrong with it.

I had the same problem and took it in to the dealer they replaced a fuse and a relay and it fixed the problem and never done it again. its been few years ago but the fuse looked burned at the connectors.

Thanks for letting me know tspeed. I haven't looked at any fuses or relays.
