Default 2000 dodge dakota v8 Magnum 4.7 not starting

truck ran hot, (did not red line) pulled into intersection and turned off to check it out: would not start back up: the starter trys to start it and it will bust maybe once: check fuel on the fuel rail (all checked good): checked spark plugs: (not so good but still workable): noticed a small amount of oil on the plugs: what else could be wrong?

Note after 5-8 times of trying to start it blow radiator cap off

Or boneyard time.

Just to be clear, cylinders 5 and 6 are opposite each other, not next to each other, so you are saying no compression in both banks?

Pull the valve covers and see if the cams are turning for a start. Odds are you blew a head gasket when you overheated. Hopefully that's the extents of the damage.

You will have a difficult time if you want to replace the engine, finding one that is. The tone rings changed late in '02 so most engines out there are set up differently. You can change them but you have to take the crank out to do it.

Don't keep trying to start it. I have this funny feeling your head gasket has failed and water is in the cylinders. Then, when you crank it you're hydrolocking and blowing water back out the cylinder, overpressurizing the cooling system, and blowing the cap.

Don't know if this will help any but, I have an '03 with the 4.7 and recently did a rebuild of the top end do to a blown head gasket.....not sure of the differences in yours and mine but it cost me around $700 just for all the parts required for the rebuild.....the parts included, Head Gasket Set ($110), Head Bolts ($38 per set x2), Timing Chain Cover Gasket ($45), Timing Set ($385) Motor had 207k miles on it so it was time, 8 plugs ($4.50 x8), Machine work on the heads ($200), 6 quarts of synthetic oil ($8.99 x6), and an oil filter ($5). If you are going to do a rebuild I recommend getting the parts from rockauto.com!!! I saved close to $250 on the parts from them versus the local parts house.
