Towing Question
Hello all, just a quick question. I have an 02 Dakota 4.7 v8 quad cab with a 3.55 gr. I just picked up a travel trailer that weighs around 4400 lbs dry. I pulled it home (about 20 miles with a couple good size hills) and it seemed to do pretty good. The book says it's max is 4600 lbs but the factory towing package says 6500 lbs? Does anyone have any experience with this. Any recommendations? Thanks! also it is a 2 wheel drive and I had the sway control etc.

All dakota factory tow packages are rated for 6,500 pounds. That is the maximum lbs the tow hitch reciever is rated to handle with the set up. Your vehicle is rated to handle 4,600 because that is what the engine/tranny/differential ratio/brakes/suspension are capable of tow. Anyone of those five things effect your vehicles capability, in this case your differential is what is holding you back. 2wd is helping you alot though.

i can tell you ur truck can tow right at 10 k with a lot less. mods where trans cooler and trailer brakes/controller. you will get single digit mpg though.
