Question fuel level is all fubar

ok so i got a 2000 CC w/ 3.9L, 22 gal tank. and the fuel level unit works out of the tank, but hangs in the tank. to verify it was working, i pulled the pump, drained it. and re-connected it out of tank. then i turned key to on, and moved the float with string while looking at gauge, and it moved with the string.. meaning as the float went up and down the level on the gauge moved. but in the tank it hangs. i know i have 11+ gallons (around half tank) and the thing reads 1/4 tank. WTF!?!?!

how do you get the connector for the wiring thats INSIDE the pump assembly unplugged? i wanna check the terminals for corrosion.

ALSO, this is a BONE YARD PUMP, that had a faulty sending unit on it, i replaced that with the sending unit off the original pump. (original pump didnt stop working it suffered damage). the wires to the unit, are solder on. so i soldered them on, and in the right spots.

bottom line, the one i have now does work, but is slow to respond, or doesnt respond at all while in the tank. please help
