Hello, atthewmartin114

Thank you for your input, what you are describing, pretty much sums up the entire scenario, unfortunately, we really don't have any experience in changing a timing chain and feel a bit intimidated by it at the moment. Is it a job that needs precision measurements etc. ? would you happen to know of anywhere where I could find step by step instructions, or would you say the step by step instruction on this site, http://www.4wdmechanix.com/NP231-and...ld-Part-1.html (sorry if that breaks the dont post links to other forums rule??, and it is the same transfer case.) are sufficient ?

This completely explains why it did not feel like it was going completely into gear , and popped out so easily ( plus started the grinding), would you say that it might have ground gears off or rounded them by now in the few times that we have had to use it?

By Collars, are you referring to the sleeve like price that the sprockets are attached to that the chain rides on? if so, do you have any tips to keep these aligned properly during installation?

Thank you very much for your time and trouble.
We have found this to be very valuable information regarding our problem... So this really doesnt shine a good light on a rebuilt transfer case does it?? :'(

just wanted to update this thread to say that we have fixed a few of these problems.

first the grinding noise, changing the Tcase fixed this, along with a proper shift linkage alignment (all 4 wheels off the ground and the TCase and shift lever in 4 Hi) works like a charm!

problem 2 "wild vents", we changed the check valve in the brake booster, didn't fix anything, also noticed the cruise control wont set to anything above 100 KMH, so thinking there is something else at play here...THANKS VERY MUCH for all of the KIND help

problem 3 apparently was not the bug deflectors buzzing, we continue to go insane.

Problem 4 grinding noise from Tcase area, now sounds like it is actually the Cat Converter, we will look into changing this or at least banging the broken chunks out of it for now? (if any)

just wanted to update this for any others experiencing these kind of troubles.

Just to be clear, the HVAC check valve is not in the brake booster, it's in a vacuum line attached to the brake booster.

There is also a check valve in the booster - but that has nothing to do with the HVAC.

Check all the vacuum lines and make sure the linkage for the cruise control is connected correctly.

Hello DakDan,
We changed the one that pushes into the front of the brake booster and has two vac lines coming out of it, and a port off of the front thats capped. Is there another one on the surface of that, that I should be looking for? we can't seem to locate any other check valve other than that one.

As a side note, we also are having trouble with out cruise control, which I understand can also be affected by a vacuum leak etc. (I posted another thread if you want more details on this issue, https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...ml#post3040333 ) I appreciate your responses as they are very helpful.

From your description you changed the wrong valve. The HVAC check valve also will affect operation of the cruise control - as it controls vacuum to the reservoir. See the attached pics.

Make sure there isn't a lot of slop in the linkage to the cruise control. Take off the air hat and make sure the linkage is attached correctly. There is only one vacuum line to the servo but check it for cracks as well.

Note: mine might look a little different due to the year and engine.

Thanks!!
yes I see we ended up changing the booster check valve instead...... will have to wait until tomorrow since everything is closed today (Canada day) and see if Dodge can find the right one this time.

in the mean time we are trying to figure out what the buzzing noise is (the one we thought was the bug deflectors but wasn't), and I was wondering if you would be willing to listen to a video of the noise? or should I post in a new topic? Thanks!
Donny

Post the video here so we can hear the noise.

ok, just uploading the videos, and with that Hvac valve, when we take it off, you can blow through it with no resistance at all, and to suck on it closes it completely with no resistance. It seems to move freely with no leaks?? Do you feel it still needs changing? My mom is thinking maybe it is being effected because of the catalytic converter maybe being plugged? It has been making a rattly noise for a little while. or else because theres a small hole in the muffler, one or the other is effecting the back pressure in re: to the vacuum lines? Does that sound feasible?

EDIT:
video one:
video 2 to follow with better noise quality.

The noise starts at about 110 in this video but often starts around 80 KMH, seems to be more pronounced on windy days? but is still very loud on dead calm days like it was today. The noise when using a stethoscope is most pronounced when jammed against the dash on driver side...however sitting in the passenger side and opening the window sounds like its coming from that side (passenger) and vice versa. Sometimes it goes away for a few minutes randomly and rarely. this time the radio didnt make static noise but has been known to in the past enough that we just dont turn it on. We have removed the bug deflectors with no change, we have taped the windshield with heavy duty thick "gorilla tape" (and have had a new windshield installed) with no change in tone or pitch. we have looked for loose tape, tags, cords etc. nothing found, we have had the garage look at it they found nothing and even tested the alternator, no findings but he said hes sure its an electrical noise. The first video shows speed, but with the camera sitting at the speedometer area, the noise is not as audible, (it is the constant humming noise you hear in the video about 1 minute in and somewhere around 100- 110 KM it starts and continues until the very end of the video. The second video just shows the noise as best as we can pick it up on our video camera.
The high pitch buzzing noise is the hum we are talking of, the low humm is the engine, and the ticking rattley noise is ....im holding the camera in my hand on the steering column and its jiggling on it.

Video 2: The noise is right from the beginning, gets a little louder through out the video.

I'd still replace the check valve.

Hopefully someone else chimes in on the noise. It's funny how it just seems to appear in the 1st video.

Ya, that just appearing, thats usually how it always begins, it just starts at usually a high enough speed, any where from 80 - 100 and on, and on bad days even as low as 50 KM. It gets so loud we are almost yelling at each other just to talk. Is there anything in the brake cylinder being that its in that top window corner that the noise is the loudest and that seems to be the only major thing in the area.

We will order and replace the valve tomorrow morning still, we really value and appreciate the time you are taking to help us out here, it sure gives us a lot better ideas on direction to look.

The sad thing is we have let the pickup go without maintenance for several years now as my mom had stage IV pancreatic cancer in October 2010 (diagnosis time but was suffering for long before that, they had given her only 3 weeks to live. I went down with her to mexico for natural treatment and she is now cancer free and we are trying to clean up what has been neglected in that time.
