Default Transmission slips?

Got a 97 dakota 3.9 with what i believe (but haven't confirmed) is a 42re. The other day i was beating the truck up a little on country roads and since then it feels like it slips out of 2nd gear, but ONLY immediately after comming out of 1st after a complete stop (it does it every time too). It doesn't slip if i put it in second with the selector while im at a stop and shift to drive at about 2000 rpm (is that something i should do until i can fix her up?).

I was wondering if adjusting the bands would fix/help with this problem. From what ive researched it helps with this problem if the slip is from 2nd to 3rd, but haven't really seen much for 1st-2nd.

Thanks
Doug

For future reference

The problem was a detached kickdown cable.
