98 Dakota v8-4x4 shift problems

Hi, Whats the most likely reason that a 98 with V8 and 4x4 with automatic has sort of harsh shifts? It does go into all gears but shifts hard. Any ideas on the probable causes?

Have you made sure that the atf is at the right level and doesn't smell burnt?

How many miles and has atf and filter ever been changed?
