worth rebuilding Leaky Rack & Pinion??
is it even worth buying the rebuild kit for the rack and pinion? i have a leaking rack and the 2wd rack is hard to find at the local yards, im due for surgery in 2 weeks so i dont have much to work with, and am gettin tired of strong arming this steering wheel...
some people say if i try to rebuild it, it will still leak, i found something that said if i put the main part with the main seals in the freezer and cool it down before assembling it, that it will NOT leak because the freezing causes the seals to contract, then when they cool down they expand back to size and seal up, This may not be true, i know theres a rack for like $130ish on ebay, but like i said, im strugglin as it is due to another surgery and a bunch of tests ive had to do

Just my two cents...
I've gotten a lot of parts out of boneyards in my life but a rack isn't one of them.
If it's been open for any length of time you don't want to contaminate your pump with any crap in the system (never mind what it'll also do to the rack).
What about "unseen damage" from an accident or something? Or, what if it leaks worse.
Rebuilding it? Never done it. If I had to I'd buy one already rebuilt. It'll have a warranty for one thing and you know it's clean. It's not hard to remove/replace.

Don't go with the cheapest either I have heard bad things regarding poor quality rebuilt racks.
As they say you get what you pay for rockauto has them I think or go local so its easy to return.

Okay, i guess ill go with a rack from like rockauto or locally, i was just wondering if it was worth rebuilding, i figured if i can rebuild a Honda 5 speed MT, then a Rack shouldnt be too difficult, i will buy a GOOD Rack and experiment with this leaky rack just because i like to tinker with things
You could try to DIY it first if its just the seals you could be ok but if the Bore is out of round then its going to be a recurring problem or not work at all.
Rockauto has an ACDELCO its pricy but I would go with that one as A-1 CARDONE quality has vanished another good American company gone bad/cheap
Their will come a time when the economy comes around and people will start wanting quality again that’s when all the American companies that sold out to China will wish they never sold out to China as China parts have nothing to do with Quality.
