I have a 96 5.2 engine. According to my factory service manual, the V8 came with a 46re, not a 44re. Did this change in later years?

Usually you'd have a 44RE behind a 5.2, up until '99. In '00 they dropped the 5.2 in favor of the 4.7 which uses the 45RFE.

The 46RE was used behind the 5.9.
The 42RE was used behind the 3.9.
