ive been trying to figure out whats wrong with my dads 1998 ford Ranger 2.5, and its a PITA to drive because we believe that the oil pump pulley (Which is timed with the Cam/Crank pulleys) is not on time which is throwing off the Cam sensor,

so im gonna just clean up the outside of the injectors up, and ill throw on the banks headers later, my birthday is on the 17th, and id like to be driving my own vehicle by then

i see for my intake to use the 4.0 TB, i dont need to shave much off the intake hole, its actually just a little bit that needs to be removed

I am getting a Misfire, pulling up Code P1391, it Randomly misfires, and at times will run Perfectly fine, My brother says its a Ground, but i see all of my grounds secured

My Compression is as follows (Ran 3 Times)

Cyl 1: 140 140 140
Cyl 2: 125 130 135
Cyl 3: 125 120 120
Cyl 4: 125 125 125

i managed to find a 2.5 dakota in a yard and pulled the Dizzy and the crank sensor, i swapped out the dizzy and its still doin the same thing, i havent changed out the crank sensor just yet

I wouldn't worry about the compression at this time the rings need to seat in.

Go for the crank sensor

I pulled an OEM crank sensor from a running dakota, LKQ buys running cars for people to pick from, so im gonna swap that out tomorrow, i was reading that a bad crank sensor can signal the P1391 code, but since ive swapped out distributors we can dismiss the distributor as the problem

AZ's P1391 code pulls up a possible Timing problem (stretched chain or 1 link off) But timing on a chain cant change randomly..

^^ Whats he talkin bout? does that apply to this engine?

I will also pull my plugs and take pics of them tomorrow, to me they were wayyy wayyy too tan/orange

First off 00DakDan knows his stuff I would listen to him.

1. Pull the Neg battery terminal and reset the PCM

2. Check the distributor Pickup Coil pull it out and inspect it and clean it if dirty it also may be seated off just a hair.

3. I know from experience that the distributor cap's on the market now are horrible I will only buy the high end ones (copper) not aluminum from rockauto AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 5D1108A {#F994G} Premium

4. What sparkplugs are you using?

He may know his stuff, but idk what hes talking about so i need to learn about that because its totally new, ill explain very simply why i have no clue....... I learned the little bit i know from my Father, and in the past few weeks ive learned he never really goes into detail nonetheless he Rigs stuff to work, doesnt properly fix whatever issue may be occurring, i on the other hand like to Read.. Trial n Error, and keep at it until its done the right way, i may not have Every mechanic tool known to man but im not stupid enough to follow my fathers actions to end up like him (Pissed off cause his stuff never runs right) if i need help with something i have people to ask if need be, but im sure someone else has had this P1391 code from my same problem

EDIT:

A fork with a slot is supplied on the bottom of the
distributor housing where the housing base seats
against the engine block (Fig. 38). The centerline of
the slot aligns with the distributor holddown bolt
hole in the engine block. Because of the fork, the dis-
tributor cannot be rotated. Distributor rotation is not
necessary as all ignition timing requirements are
handled by the powertrain control module (PCM).
The position of the distributor determines fuel syn-
chronization only. It does not determine ignition timing.
