Default Lifter Removal Tool

I am preparing to replace the lifters in my 03 4.7.

I know I need Miller tool 8516a to compress the valve springs. I remember seeing a link to somewhere online that rents that tool but I can't find it anywhere.
I tried the search function here but with no luck.
If anyone has that link or anymore information it would be a great help.
Also, is this tool an absolute necessity or can it be done with any other tools?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Why are you replacing them?

I ask because I remember well trying for one month to extract a bad lifter out of my Dads 327 Chevy engine that's one month of bloody knuckles and tweaked backs.

We scratched up the lifter bore doing so but we smoothed it out stuck a new one in and it ran great the head was mushroomed out some what a pain.

Those old engines could take a tone of abuse and keep running

Well, I can guarantee it's not just for the fun of it..lol.
I have had some lifter noise on startup since I got the truck which I understand is fairly normal for the 4.7. But in the last 3 months I have got a lifter or two that doesn't stop tapping after a minute or so. It is pretty well constant now and yes the oil has been changed and I have used 5w30 in it since I have had it to help it out as much as possible.
And yes the 327 is awesome. Back in the day I had a 67 Impala SS Convertible with a 327 along with a 78 Z28 with a 350 and Factory 4-speed. The Impala would run circles around the Camaro and get better gas mileage doing it. That 350..man oh man..the tach would go up and the fuel gauge would go down.

You may want to try 1 qt of ATF mixed with the engine oil first for about 5 miles and then change the oil and filter.

Probably the best price $75 around for the tool. You could use it, and then sell it on. Either on this forum someplace, or on CL or Ebay.
