No high setting on blower

Default No high setting on blower

Been searching through old threads and cannot find an easy answer because I keep getting results for blowers that work only on high. My issue is that I have all the settings except high. I replaced the resistor not too long ago and it didn't do anything to help.

I am thinking it may be the **** itself, or a relay, but haven't found much info on either. Anyone have this issue before? Thanks.

What year is the truck? Haynes book has directions on checking the switch with a volt meter. There is no relay for the switch and if the fan relay is bad the fan won't work on any speed.

My truck is the 01 Dakota QC. I don't own the Haynes manual, I will have to find the info.

Check your connections at the resistor. It is VERY common for them to melt/burn.

I think you are right in checking the fan switch. The motor itself is probably OK if it runs on the 3 lower speeds. You can un-clip the wire harness from the right side of the blower. Un-twist the wires, plug the connector back in and ground the black wire. Turn the ignition on, if the blower motor is OK it will run at full speed.

There are 5 wires going to the back side of the switch. The black wire is ground input to the switch. The switch works by switching ground to each of the 4 corresponding inputs to the blower motor resistor. The switch regulates the fan speed/velocity of air flow from the fan by giving ground input to the resistor pack which in turn will give a little more of a ground to the blower motor itself with each increase in speed that you select from the switch. You need to check for continuity between the black ground wire on the switch and each of the 4 fan speed wires. First turn on the ignition and put the selector on AC or heat. Then check the continuity of the fan switch wires to the black ground input:

speed 1 is tan, 2 is light green/yellow, 3 is light blue and the 4th (highest speed) is black/tan. If you don't have continuity between each of these wires and the black ground wire or if you have continuity between more than just one speed wire at a time you need to replace the control head. Dodge does not sell just the fan switch by itself and as far as I know you can't buy it aftermarket either.

If the switch and/or resistor turn out to be bad, you might want to use a clamp-style ammeter and check the current draw of the green fan motor wire with the engine running and fan on high speed. Even though the blower motor is fused at 40 amps in the Power Distribution Center, if it draws more than about 17 or 18 amps on high speed the motor is drawing too much current and should be replaced. The bad blower motor resistor is a known common problem in Dakota's; however the problem can often be traced back to the blower drawing too much current. I found that out for myself after replacing 2 resistor packs in less than a year's time. I still had all 4 fan speeds but the velocity of air flow was very weak, even on high speed. I put in a new resistor pack and blower motor and my heat/ac have worked great ever since. I bought my resistor pack and new fan motor at Advance and saved $40.00 with an online purchase discount code.

Thanks for the info. Super helpful. It is 3 degrees out right now so I am hoping to deal with it for the rest of the week and maybe get into it Friday night or this weekend.

I may also have a leak on the heater core, so if the blower motor does turn out to be bad I will just go in and replace everything. I will definitely report back.

Thanks for all the help. To update, I went through and troubleshot based on the info here. There were two problems which made it harder but I ended up only having to clean all of the connections with electronics cleaner and cleaned the contacts in the switch. All is working well. While I was in the heater core I changed the blower out just to be safe also.
