Anyone out there done this?
They make block heaters that either screw in or you can get ones that go into a freeze plug area. Mine in my truck runs about 750 watts and in about 2-3hrs time my coolant temp is up to 100. Other option is put heat in your garage.

What about changing the t-stat for one that stay closed longer, higher temp? I was thinking about doing this. Bought an Equinox for my wife and the thing heats up so fast you don't even need to let it warm up to get the heat going. My Dak takes miles to get any heat going even after running and "warming up" for 5 minutes or so before I take off.

I wouldn't go any higher than the stock 195. The radiator fan comes on at 210.

Put a new OEM thermostat in.

Within 5 minutes driving (back roads), even when around 0, I've got heat.

Even with my 180 stat, I get heat in a hurry. Be in the 20's when I start, up to 40 by end of the street, and 80-90 when I leave the development. Getting from 100 to 140 usually takes a good couple minutes, but once it hits 140 I can turn the fan to full heat.

My Dakota has been the best vehicle I've had in terms of quick heat.

Partially clogged heater core, Dakmm?

A dirty coil could also prevent sufficient heat transfer.

I don't have an issue with the heat, the heat pumps, I cane barely have it on the lowest setting and the temp mid way and it's still hot in the truck. I was just saying it seems like it takes a bit long for the engine to heat up, but then again it could just seem like that since the wife's Equinox gets hot before you get to the end of the street.

Its just the nature of the beast. They are all different. My 98 dakota after about 5-10min of idling and then about 5 miles of driving would get the temp to move. Now our 04 grand cherokee idles for about 5-10 min and the temp is started to move off of 100.

I think gm is nuts, I think they run 200+ thermostats and some engines have two thermostats.
