Default No power when gas pedal pressed to floor on 2000 dodge dakota

My boyfriends truck rubs beautiful normal driving, but when we want to speed up quickly like to pass another vehicle, the rpms speed up but the truck does not. In other words we cant stepon the gas and it haul butt like it should. If we slowly press down on the pedal it will accelerate evenly with the rpms. Other than no power during hard accelaeration, truck runs fine. this is the 4.7L I believe. V8 motor. Gas mileage seems fine to me for a v8. No stumbling or misfire. Im stumped.

Automatic or manual trans? Are your RPM's up and the truck's not moving? Trans slipping? If it is then, clutch or converter. Suggest you provide more information.

its an automatic and its like its staying in the same gear when its floored. we will be driving about 45 mph and he will floor the pedal to say pass another vehicle, and when he floors it, unlike other vehicles that speed up when floored, it stays at 45 mph while the engine revs up with the acceleration. My boyfriend says its like its not shifting gears. But at regular driving it shifts just fine. If we slowly drive up in speed there are no problems at all. Its only when flooring the pedal.

If the rpm's are high and your not going anywhere it's probably trans related. If you have a tach, watch it when it shifts normally, rpm's should not shoot up and then settle down, they should drop as it shifts and gradually climb. A good tool for troubleshooting a trans problem as you might not feel it slipping at normal driving acceleration.

But when you accelerate to the floor with the pedal shouldn't the rooms raise high anyways cuz of the sudden acceleration jump? Like if I step on the gas in my hyundai it feels like im in a rocket. Like I just hit the hyper speed button on the starship enterprise. It just takes off with power. Love my santa fe. But in the dodge it sounds like it overdrive hyper speed but im still at 45mph and if I let off the floor with the pedal it will start shifting and going faster.

Okay....now your getting a little closer to how it's acting. Absolutely Rev's should rise on a downshift but, should the tranny be downshifting to that low of a gear? (No). It should downshift and then immediately go to the next gear. As it goes into the next gear, watch the tach, it shouldn't rise and then fall, it should fall if the transition to the next gear is without any slippage. A tranny related problem with shifting could be holding you in too low a gear. Could very well be electronic in that case, (Transmission Control Module) not necessarily the trans being bad. The TCM will cause erratic shifting.

Start simple... is your TV cable adjusted properly? If its too loose it won't kickdown when you floor the pedal.

Fluid level correct?

Does your engine buck or misfire when you step on it?

what happens is when u step on the gas, it doesnt go any faster. but the motor revs not steady but in 1 second intervals. like it goes: vroom, vroom vroom instead of a constant vvvrrroooommm. the rpms dont go down unless u depress the gas pedal. i can slowly speed up, i just cant slam on the pedal and take off quick. does this make any sense?

Your painting the picture of what happend to mine when the Plenum Gasket failed. Are you loosing oil with no noticeable leaks? You can also take of the throttle body and look inside... if there's oil pooling in there its shot. Its a common issue on all the Magnum engines (except 4.7L). I would make certain its the 4.7L he has. Dodge offered three V8 engines in the 2000 model years that where manufactured in 1999 (4.7, 5.2, 5,9) The second half of the 2000 model year they dropped the 5.2L.
