2002 dodge dakota 4x4 won't work
Hello, this is my first time here. I have just bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota SLT 4.7L 4x4 241, XXX miles on it, new motor at 140,XXX miles. I have a problem; the four wheel drive switch doesn't work, no lights on the switch. Service 4WD is constantly on also. Would like to test the switch with a multi-meter, but I can't find a diagram to test it. If it's not the switch, any ideas? If anyone can tell me how to test my switch, I would appreciate it. Tried looking in the forum for something covering it, I checked a few threads, but couldn't find anything. Sorry if I'm repeating a question that's already been answered.
Also, the owner test drove it about two days before I bought it, and noticed the 4WD light was on. When he tried to put it into 4WD it wouldn't go. That's all I know. Thank you for the help.

Howdie and welcome to the forum!
When you start your truck, will the lights on the switch all come on for a second then go off? If so, the switch is likely good. More often than not, the TCCM is the problem. It IS strange the 4WD was lit when the previous owner drove it and now it's not working at all.
Did he tell you it was on or did you see the 4WD indicator light was on? I hope you didn't get hustled. The TCCM costs around $75 to $150 at bone yards across the US; it varies based on the best price to find. I think I've read they are $350 at the stealership and then they have to program it (or some strange thing).
Thing is, when the TCCM goes out, you're stuck in the gear it was last switched to. If he WAS in 4WD, then it should still be in 4WD. Do you have a scan tool to look into the error?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I've attached a copy of the resistance readings for the switch. It's from the '01 manual but should be the same.
There is also a fuse, should be 10 amp, in the junction block on the dash.
There is another fuse, should be 20 amp, in the power distribution center under the hood, drivers side.
Odds are it is not the switch. It could be a problem with the shift motor or the transfer case control module.
The system can be checked with a DRB (Dodge diagnostic tool). Most regular scanners won't read these codes.
Hope it helps.
