Thinking about getting another Dak
If there is NO distributor it is a 4.7, it's coil on plug (COP). You'll also notice a rectangular air hat.
Check the VIN again, 8th position. The 4.7 HO didn't come out in a Dakota until 2005.
N is a 4.7
J is a 4.7 HO

Will do when the guy answers and lets me look at it, thanks.
Lots of guys here love the 4.7.
I myself do not. Nice engine but its a Mercedes and can get expensive if repairs are needed.
The old LA 318/360 has nothing on the newer Magnum 318/360.
I've had all four.
We just put a Magnum 360 in dads 66 Coronet last year. Cars so new we haven't even had it on the street yet. Complete restoration.
Been building it for about four years. It'll be ready for this summer.

Umm, no. It's not a Mercedes engine. That's a myth. At 250K, mine doesn't seem anywhere near breaking, so count me as one of the guys that like it.
Also told it can get expensive when the timing belt breaks. Pain to swap.
But I dont know.
I like the 318/360. Changing a chain if needed is fairly easy.
If engine blows up they're probably easier and cheaper to find.
But once again, beats me.
I know people like them. But they're why I bought my 99 instead of newer.
I only looked into them once when I was looking to buy a Dakota. I bought my 99 for the 318. I know nothing of the 4.7. But yes, the people I asked were apparently unreliable. Lol.
Its cool though. I like the 318/360. Always have
