Default How to Set Idle on '00 DD4WD w/4.9L

My truck is idling (or, more correctly, dying) with an idle that appears to be set below 500RPM. Can anyone tell me how to do a "quck" change in the idle? I realize there's a root problem that needs to be addressed, but my mechanic can't get to the truck until this weekend. So I'd just like to have the truck driveable until that time.

Thank you.

Should be an adjustment screw on the TB. You'll have to take the air cleaner off and have a look.

Thanks.

Throttle Body? Must be that, right?

(If I don't know what the part is, maybe I shouldn't be messing with it?...lol.)

Yes, throttle body. Follow the gas pedal cable and find where it attaches to the TB. There is usually an adjustment screw there.

some TB's have a cap over the adjustment screw, some don't. Mine does.

Also, it's a 4.7L, not 4.9L.

Do NOT manually adjust the idle. It is controlled via the IAC, the idle air control motor.

From the FSM, factory service manual:

A (factory adjusted) set screw is used to mechanically limit the position of the throttle body throttle plate. Never attempt to adjust the engine idle speed using this screw. All idle speed functions are controlled by the IAC motor through the PCM.

Improperly adjusted will cause errors between the throttle position sensor which will "think" you're NOT trying to idle. Clean the throttle body and the IAC passages. Most likely the IAC passages are full of carbon and causing the problem.

Ya, this is true, but he just wanted a "quick fix". I was not fully sure if the 00 had a cap on it or not. Dang government regulations.....lol

Thanks to everyone for all the input.

As it happens, I removed the air intake (?? sits on top of the TB and then is connected by a large pipe to the air filter) and saw the pair of cables (one is throttle and the other is idle??). There were no adjustments that could be made there, as far as I could see.

I then followed the one cable (I think for the idle) over to a device ("idle air controller"?) mounted to the inside of the engine compartment. Upon removing the two screws that I could see and get to, I gently pulled the parts apart...just a tad...and it really started to look like I could seriously break something, even without trying. So I put everything back together, shut the hood and walked away.

Clearly, I should wait for my mechanic to take care of the issues. In the meantime, however, it's been educational, to say the least.

Thanks again for all the help!
