Default valve job vs engine replacement

I have a 2002 Dakota 4.7 with about 190k miles, ive been getting a 0301 code (cyl 1 misfire) there is almost 0 compression in cyl 1. I suspect i am going to need a valve job, but would it be a bad idea to get the valve job done and not just replace the entire engine and also what is the average cost of both?

thank you

Pull the valve cover first. Make sure the valves are actually operating as they should. You may have dropped a valve seat or the rocker arm could have failed - it does happen. Then shoot some oil into the spark plug hole and recheck compression. If the rings are bad it would help.

Labor is the killer. Are you doing this yourself?
