I rebuilt my tranny with the help of a buddy who builds transmissions for a living. You'll need specialty tools to remover the detent plug and you have to buy a whole kit that cost about $500. I welded up a custom made tool to avoid the cost. Plus this is one of the more complicated manual transmissions to work on. You can read through the FSM and see if you're up for the task, but if you have to ask if the syncros are in the transmisssion or clutch I'm guessing that you're going to be in way over your head.

It took me 2 days to get the tranny out, then a 1/2 day to tear it apart and diagnose the problem, then after waiting on parts to come in I spent 2 nights getting it back together. Then another full day to get the tranny back in. And if you mess one little part up the whole thing has to be done over again.

And finding parts for it was nearly impossible. Just to get a bearing retainer c clip I had to wait a week for the dealer to order one in. I'd say that if you want to DIY it you should remove the tranny yourself and then have it worked on and reinstall it yourself.

Yeah as the weather is getting colder it's getting harder. What fluid should I be using? In tranny and transfer case. Cause I'm going to change both this weekend. I've had the truck for a while and I'm not sure when it was last changed also how much does it take to change the tranny? And transfer case. I can't find it in my manual. It just says fill to hole but I don't want to buy way too much or too little

I put Royal Purple 75W-90 in mine and it seems to work like a dream. The manual specified 75W-90, and Royal Purple stated on the bottle that although it was rated GL-4/GL-5 instead of GL-3 like the book specified, it was non corrosive to soft yellow metals like copper and brass (AKA your synchronizers).
