Default '97 Dakota Transmission overheat leak then fine

We have a 1997 Dodge Dakota v6. The shifting was a little iffy in it but one day we were hauling a ride on mower and the tranny starting pouring fluid out of where it mounts to the engine. We pulled over and it stopped. After putting it in gear and just sitting there eventually it would pour more out. So we got it towed.

We change the filter, did a flush, and refilled the fluid and the shifting got better and it stopped pouring out fluid. To be on the safe side we drove it around the neighborhood and then changed the filter and fluid again and the shifting got even better and so far absolutely no fluid has been leaking. We're a little cautious and hesitant about driving it as is.

Is there any test we could run to find the exact cause? Or is this a common problem and there is a clear solution? We were also thinking it could've just been a blockage that cleared up. We were also thinking it could be the fluid regulator sensor getting stuck or something along that nature. Any insight? Thank you!

Sounds like you had a front pump blockage or failure, and it was pushing fluid out the convertor snout seal of the front pump. Or the seal just flat out failed. Did any sediments other than clutch dust come out in the flush?
