Roger that. If money weren't an obstacle, I would certainly entertain a new locker rear end.

Since this is a back up vehicle, I'd be happy to find a good used Open rear end. I just don't want to be driving down the road and then.... BOOM ! What's the chances of this happening ? The rear end makes NO noise while driving straight or turning Right. Just on left turns and pulling away from a dead stop.

I'm still puzzled as to WHY the LR axle gets bound up in the first place.

"IF" the clutches are worn out, wouldn't it NOT lock up ???

Why would that happen.... and only on one side ?

Could this make my truck un-driveable at some point ?

When the clutch plates overheat or get damaged they can break. Pieces can come off and go through the gears. That will make it undriveable. AlaskaJeff posted pics of what can happen in post #51. Worst case it can lock up and you'll spin out.

The noise or lack there of does not mean the problem is only on one side. You only hear the noise when turning left but the loads in the differential change as you turn and that can affect what is happening in the differential and the noises produced.

I did find this very nice article on rebuilding a Ford Traction locks/Limited slip
rear end. Not exactly like the Chrysler 8.25, but still very similar in nature.

And......

Here's a video of a Dana 44 getting clutches installed.

Question

Is there anyway to tell how many splines the axles have WITHOUT yanking them out and counting ?

Apparently, the Chrysler 8.25 uses (2) different axles. A (27) spline and a (29) spline.

Would axles happen to be different (spline count) based on if it were a 5 or 6 lug axle ?

I'll 2nd that.

I don't believe the lug count matters, it's the year.
