Default Back up camera install

Hi folks,
I goit a back up camera as a gift, I have read 2 different threads on is saying to tap in right at the back up bulb to supply power the other was to run a wire right to the fuse block. I was think of using a "quick splice" right at the rear tail light. Your ideas????

Reverse is going to be hard to tap cleanly. You'll have to use a trailer tap from right up on the light housing. Your other option would be plugging into the trailer connector on the hitch or at least getting the plug-n-play trailer wiring adapter, but then it would have power off brake lights.

It may be better to use solder and heat shrink or you can get the water resistant butt connectors that you use a heat gun to seal it up after crimping the connection. Scotch Lock and trailer wire type connectors may not last very long with the wire splicing at the tail light being more exposed to the weather. It should be OK to pick up the reverse power at the reverse lights long as you make a good reliable weather tight wire splice connection.

This is what I used on mine. I tapped into the harness going to the trailer plug (yes, it was wired for backup lights) by cutting the wire, then using one of those heat-shrink butt connectors with two wires stuck in one side (original wire, plus the add-on).

The other way you mentioned (directly to the fuse block) allows you to have the camera on anytime, even in drive.

I have done this on a few trucks for people. Works great if you have a camper or other load blocking your view through the rearview mirror.

What I'd love to find is a dashcam that takes the camera input from a backup camera so you have ONE screen up there.

Oh, and it be affordable *grins*

I'm pretty sure most monitors have at least two inputs. My Navigation system does, and it was under $300.

Neither of my two TomToms have an auxillary input, although neither is in-dash.

Most of the DVRs I've found for under $300 don't have an aux video inputs either.

The monitors that fit in the rear view mirrors? No aux input, or no DVR function.

Leastwise on the ones I've looked at.

THAT said - I freely admit that there may be 150,000 different ones, only 50 don't have the two inputs, and ... I've looked at 49 of the 50!
