Default Shifting question and odometer question

1st when driving I sometimes have let off the accelerator to get the truck to shift, what would cause this?

2nd the odometer is not working at all(digital) some numbers show up but they are changing all the time, but the rest of the console works fine. Any idea?

Thanks

Rich

Is this the 2000 Dakota, 4x4, 3.9?

Could be a cluster problem for the odometer. Try the cluster self test.
With the truck OFF, press and hold the "trip reset" button down. While holding it, turn the truck to ON, don't start it. Continue holding for about 10 seconds until CHEC appears in the odometer window. It'll test all the lights and sweep the gauges. If there are any faults you should have some 3 digit codes appear in the odometer window.

On the tranny, the 42RE, it could be the throttle linkage not adjusted correctly, or the shift linkage itself. It could be an internal problem too.

well I did the key thing and I noticed it cycled thru the gauges and such, but the digital display is still not working correctly. Would it be the cluster is self or is this connected to the computer?

Did it give you any codes when it finished?

The cluster is a computer, as is the PCM, CTM, all the modules.

What I could make out was 869, but that's it, and the trip meter is the only thing semi working(digital) everthing else on the cluster works

It should be a 9xx code, or 110.

The cluster is probably bad.
