Use thermoplastic bushings, Moog is one brand, good chance you will not ever do them again.
Probably any shock will be better than what you have now. So a step up in price will get you a better shock, should anyway. Monroe reflex are a good upgrade.
If you you move your steering wheel back and forth while driving and get no response from 11 o'clock to 1, you will probably need an intermediate shaft.
