Hello, I have the 99' 5.2L V8.
My bearing in the water pump went out, so I replaced the water pump. Now that that is said and done, it will not start. I checked to see if there was spark, and there is none. I replaced the spark plugs, battery (I had a dead cell), ignition coil, cap and rotor, and still no spark. The engine cranks, but the rotor under the distributor will not spin. I used a code reader that I got from AutoZone, and it spat out P0340, which states that it's either the Camshaft position sensor, or the timing. I don't see how changing my water pump could cause any of this. I've been out of a vehicle for almost a month, and it's really getting annoying. I have heard that it could also be the Crankshaft sensor, but I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I'm looking for some advice. Thanks

 

The rotor in your distributer doesn't turn?

Sounds like the timing chain snapped if so just bad luck it happens.

Did you pull the timing cover for any reason?

A timing chain failure would be one possibility.

The distributor is driven via the camshaft. There is also a roll pin on the distributor drive gear that could have failed. Mark the position of the distributor before you pull it out! If it turns it will affect your fuel sync.

Don't worry about codes now. You have a mechanical problem if the rotor isn't turning and that needs to be resolved. The code is caused by the mechanical failure, not the other way.

 

Disconect the battery first so you dont accidently crank the engine if you remove the distributor you dont want the engine to turn even an inch so it lines back up.


How many miles on it chain ever changed?


Are you sure the distributor rotor is not moving?


You could first pull a valve cover off turn the engine over if the valves dont move then its the chain.
