Default cooling system

hey there guys I need figuring out y my 00 Dakota seems like it wants to overheat. i was trying to jump start my 99 Durango when i notice my engine temp gauge was almost 260 degrees. i turn off the truck for a min or two to see if it was just reading wrong but it wasn't. so instead of waiting til the engine to cool down i just took the risk and drove home but notice when i was on the highway doin like 60 mph the temp gauge started to go back to normal, this happened a couple other times so now i was wondering if nyone had this problem and wat are some of the causes.

Thanx
Derrick

Sounds like the clutch fan is toast at idle it should pull air but if bad it will pull only a small amount of air then if driving you get air forced past the rad and things cool down all you need is to be going around 40 to 45 mph to keep air going past the rad properly to cool things down.

Get it fixed ASAP the 4.7 doesn't like getting overheated it will pop head gaskets all too easy not cheap never let a 4.7 overheat.

I just had the same issue. Replaced the clutch fan and help a little but would still over heat at slower speeds. Puled the thermostat and tested it. Did not open in boiling water.
Replaced all is good now.

And yes at highway speed the temp was good. climbing a hill or intown it would over heat.
I would recommend changing the Tstat and the fan clutch as 98DAKAZ said 4.7 should not be over heated.
