Default Heat/AC Temp weirdness

Hi all,

2004 Dakota 140k miles. 4.7, 4x4, manual. Has AC. Pretty dang near stock.

Ever since having the truck I noticed a little weirdness in the cabin temperature controls.

Heat works great.

Without the AC on, if I turn the **** all the way to max blue, the air blowing into the cabin is noticably above the outside temp. I dont have temp readings, but even on a day with temps in the 50s I need to crack a window or open the rear slider because with the **** turnf all the way to cold it just doesnt blow cool outside air.

If i'm running the AC and it's 85* or under, it works fine, no complaints. If it's warmer than 85 or so, the AC feels weak. Its way better than NO ac, but it's noticably weak. Now initailly i figured this was just a case of it losing its charge, however when I made the conneciton with the fact that the truck never blows cool outside air into the cabin even in COLD weather, I got to thinking.

Is there something in the temp control that could be allowing heat to still be going even when its turned all the way to cool? Something like a blend door, only not for directing the air, but for the mixture of hot vs. cold air?

Or am I just crazy. I just know that in any of my other vehicles if I turn the temp down it basically blows outside temp air, and this truck really does not.

Yea sounds like either the blend door or the recirculation door or both are not working properly. Fixing it could get expensive.

My understanding is the dealership can run a diagnostic on the system that may fix it or not if any servos are bad or you have broken doors. Replacing the servos or doors means pulling the dash not cheap around $1K in labor for $50 to $100 in parts. If you had this problem as you purchased it from a dealership they would of fixed it free.

I can FAINTLY hear everything moving and adjusting through all positions of the doors. It seems like everything in there is working, just something is a little bit "off"

I'm not pulling the dash and I'll live with it, but if there was a diagnostic or something to kind of "reset" the servos that would be worth a try.

Worth a try call a dealership and see what they say about a diagnostic for the HVAC servos.

Well, if nothing else helps, try installing a heater valve so you can shut off coolant flow to the heater core during the summer months. If you get creative enough and can control it from the cabin, it would completely solve the problem.
