Most likely the water pump is shot and the impellers are hitting the inside of the housing. That's the grinding noise.

But no, it won't burn through the drive belt.

You're thinking of an idler, tensioner, or some other driven item off the belt (smog pump, power steering pump, whatever.)

Ralph, as I was typing "fan", I was thinking AC idler/clutch pulley the whole time. You read me right. Anyway, the issue does sound like the water pump, as jkeaton said.
