Default New to this, engine flutters

I hope I can get some help/suggestions here. So I picked up a 97 dodge Dakota 4x4 V8. Truck is in pretty decent shape, however the previous owner done some modifications...for instance he took out the AC pump and put a shorter serpentine belt on it.
The truck flutters when driving though, kinda feels like it's choking out but it doesn't stall or anything like that. It idles great. But on the highway, it's just not very smooth as far as when I accelerate. I hope this makes sense. I know it needs a custom tailpipe too because it's got a aftermarket muffler on it and billows a lot of smoke. Maybe this has an affect on how it runs?
Also, the oil pressure goes down to zero when I stop and goes back up when I drive. The oil levels are good and the color oil looks good too. I haven't had the oil changed yet (filter maybe bad?) . I know this is common but haven't heard many solutions to this.
Also, I read there's no Mass Air flow sensor. I have the P0170 code go off when it gets scanned. Thanks for any help/suggestions

I say start with a new quality map sensor not a cheap one and a tune-up.

I'm wondering do you have an automatic or stick?

Does it have a power chip?

map senser is like a Mass Air flow sensor. Power chip I don't know but it over rides the computer to give you more power never used one others can tell you this.

Thanks, I've been researching the map sensor. The scan code was P0171...and I think if I test the map sensor to find out if it's good or not will give me good direction so I thank you for your input.

Default So now

I installed a new MAP (manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor and TPS (throttle position Sensor). I am still having engine trouble...probably spark plugs or wires

You never checked your plugs wires cap and rotor a tune-up?

Should have checked them first? TPS why? Hows the intake plenum they do develop that problem.

Don't know much about the intake plenum. I did the plugs and they were all dirty. Really bad. It still runs funny though. I did notice a change though in how it sounded and rode but I feel like it's not firing all the way when I try to open it up on the highway. It's a gas guzzler too. I will have more info soon. Maybe new wires or Dist Cap? I'm not sure. Gonna look into intake plenium

Default So...

I had to get the exhaust completely redone from the manifold out the rear. I guess there was a clog in it. The previous owner hacked it all up so had to be done. It's running well however, I think it's still running rich. When I give it gas a lot of smoke, mostly black comes out. I think a new O2 sensor would be good, the first one. Any thoughts? Also, none of the Gage's work on dashboard. The lights work, turn signals, but no temp, speedo or gas. The backlight works and the airbag/brake light on. Thanks
