45RFE trans issue
Hello all,
New to the forum, hope someone can help with my problem.
My truck is a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab 2 wheel drive 4.7 liter engine. I replaced the engine about 10,000 miles ago. Truck now has 230,000 miles.
The problem I have now is the truck will not move forward or reverse when it's cold, but after it warms up a bit, the trans will slip really bad in forward and reverse but it moves the vehicle. I presume this is what is referred to as "Limp Mode". I drove the truck home from work the night before without any noticeable problems. I checked the fluid level (good) and verified all the electrical connectors are secure. I plugged in my trusty Craftsman code reader and there are no codes present.
After extensive searching on the forums, YouTube, Google, etc, I can't find anything that describes any trans issues with a code present. Before I drop the pan I was hoping it could be something simple but I doubt it.
Anyone have any suggestions? I certainly would appreciate some help.

Thanks for the help. I dropped the pan (why couldn't they put a drain on the pan) and sure enough, the filter had fallen out of the pump inlet. I removed the screw and the filter just fell out. I'll put it all back together again tomorrow with new filters and fluid and let you know how it works.
There is a rubber o-ring that goes on the neck of the screen filter. Be sure it's not doubled up with the previous seal. Lube it well and I believe there is a rubbery snap when it goes in. Install an aftermarket drain plug or buy a drain pan from Advance which has it. From there on, you can just do drain and fills.
