Default 03 Dakota with 22 gal tank OR DOES IT ?????

Hey folks.. long time no see..
I have a 2003 Dak SLT 4.7 v8..
VIN-1d7hl42n03s366372
per that it says i have a 22 gallon tank.. i have owned this truck since brand new when it had 7 miles on the odometer.. and i have never put that much gas in the truck.. When i get low down to Empty.. i put in around 14 gallon US.. so im assuming i would have maybe a 16 gal tank..but my vin says 22 gallon.. i cant imagine i would have 8 gallon in reserve .. or would i ? other then running the truck dead empty .. how can i really find out or tell if i have a bad gauge from factory ?

im stumped..Thanks in advance.

I remember going throught that....look at the bottom of the gas tank, mine had a part# on it, looked it up and told me what the capacity of the tank was. Mine is a 98 though so hopefully there will be a part# on yours.

How low do you let the gauge go? My truck puts the low fuel light on when I still have about 5 gallons left. Knowing that I push the envelope and can easily put 16 gallons in my tank, often more. I'm not positive the capacity, but I know where I can go on the gauge. Haven't had to push it home yet!

Yeah.....it's a little deceiving when u go to fill er up. I thouhgt I had the smaller tank as well but it turns out it was the 22 gallon tank which is the bigger. I usually let the gas go down till the chime tells me one increment left on the gauge but I actually never fill it so I can't tell u the balance of fuel it takes.

i was checking out other threads in other dodge forums and it seems Ram owners have the same issues.. i never let my tank get lower then a 1/4 maybe 1/8.. since i live in the country and im 10miles away from nearest gas station and ive always been under impression i had a 2 gallon reserve.. from what ive read it seems the manufacturers put in a 4-7 gallon reserve .. which i think is insane.Everywhere i looked it showed 22 gallon tank.. so im going to let my tank get down to light worse case scenario my wife brings me gas. :P ( she will love that.. )

My hyundai has a 1 gallon reserve, but my truck the light comes on with about 3 gallons left. Think the most i've ever stuffed into it was 19 or 20 gallons.

i am oddly going to let myself run out of gas..but im putting a 5 gallon gas can in the back of my truck .. so i can see how far.. its odd that i just now think of this 14 yrs later since i bought the truck in 2003. i suppose its stupid curiosities and too much idle time on my hands..

The most I ever put in my 22 gallon was around 20 on dead E gauge.
