Default 383 Magnum Engine

Would it be possible, and if it is does anyone know of a kit, to put a rebuilt 383 Magnum Engine into a 3.9 Litre Dakota Magnum R/T? It's a 1999.

Mmmmm -- I'm no certified machanic, but wouldin't you be able to just put the proper motor mounts in and "drop in" the new engine?

Didnt R/T's only come with a 5.9L?

As for a motor swap (I'm assuming you mistyped 5.9 with 3.9), a 383 is a 'B' block (big blcok). Completely different mounts than teh 'A' block (small block) teh 5.9L is. You will have to replace the tranny since the current one wouldnt even bolt up to it. Need a new driveshaft (custom made for teh two different u-joint sizes), larger radiator, heavier front springs.

Can it be done? Yep. Gonna take some time and money, but it can be.

Yes I meant 3.9 Litre Dakota Sport not R/T. Do you know of any kits that would be designed for doing this conversion?

No kits that I know of. It would all be a do it yourself thing. I had a 73 Charger SE with a 383 in it. When I pulled it out (was gonna restore the car, but leave the 383 instead of the OEM 400), all I can say its a freaking HEAVY motor. Honestly it might be best to stay with small blocks if you are going with an old school motor since Dakotas do have a small block v8 option (5.2 & 5.9). Might be easiest to do and cost less. I would like to toss a 440 6PAK into mine, but the width of that thing would probably be a problem. And my idea of tossing a viper motor in mine already has been done, but yet would probably be easier, but alot more $$.

Schumacher creative services have a big block conversion kit for the 1st gen...you may want to check their website to see if they have one for the 2nd yet. If they don't build one hell of a 360... they're are several kits out on the market that can give you a 700+ hp capability with the small block. Hope that helps and good luck!

Thats funny. The 71 model 383 that was in my Charger was a Magnum. Thats what the factory aircleaner lid said.
