Question Engine swap

I have a 2002 Dakota 4x4 crew cab. The engine is toast. I am searching for another 4.7 with low miles, or a new rebuild. I am hearing that only certain year model 4.7 engines will work. Does anyone know the details about this ?? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Cincorob.

Yes, it's true. There were changes to the cam and crankshaft tone rings in the '02-'03 model year.

The easiest way to know what you have now is to pop the hood. Look at the PCM and if you have 3 connectors it is JTEC, a 16 tooth tone ring on the crank. If it has 4 connectors it is NGC. It has a 32 tooth tone ring.

'00-'02 should be JTEC. '03 up should be NGC.

They are NOT compatible.

Talking

Thanks for the info. At the risk of sounding dumb, I want to ask you what those items are, and where I might find them. Is there any way that you might be able to send me a pic? I am trying to put another 2002 4.7 back in the truck. I just need to make sure that mine is a 16 tooth gear. Thanks again for any help you can give me !!

The cam and crank tone rings are in the engine.

The PCM is the "box" under the hood on the passenger side fender well. It will have either 3 or 4 connectors. I'm betting on 3 with a 2002.

I have a 2002 dakota with a 4.7 automatic. Will a 5.2 or a 5.9 engine bolt in ??

Not directly. The transmission and mounts are different. You'll also have to redo the wiring harness and PCM since they are vastly different. There is no exact 5.2 PCM either - it was not available in the '02 Dakota.
