Default NEWBY...Several Questions

Vehicle...2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 2 X 4 3.9 Litre Magnum V6

I bought this vehicle used and I although I was confident in my purchase I have a few questions.

1) In addition to the stock clutch cooling fan there appears to be an electric fan mounted right against the back side of the radiator. Is this stock or an aftermarket add-on? The truck has a huge transmission cooler mounted on the front of the radiator behind the grill which appears to be rather stock looking.

2) The coolant system appears to need a good flushing and refill...any idea if there is a way to determine which coolant is in the engine and radiator? it is tough to tell what color it is and it appears to be low as there is very little in the overflow tank.

3) What is the best way to do a coolant flush on this vehicle?

4) The throttle body appears to be quite dirty and could use a cleaning. What is the best product and means to clean the throttle body? I have pretty good mechanical knowledge from several years ago so I know enough to be dangerous...LOL. I was going to remove the entire throttle body and give it a good scrub....is that a good idea or not?

5) Is there an easy way to flush the transmission or is that best served to the pros? I can drop the pan and change the filter but I know there are some flushing systems our there that do a complete flush.

Thanks for your answers.

Welcome to the forum.

1. The electric fan is stock. It helps increase a/c performance and supplements the mechanical fan.
2. There are "universal" coolants. If you don't know what is in it now that might be something to consider.
3. A "flush kit" is one option. It splices into the heater lines and allows you to run a lot of water through the system to clean it out. It should "backflush" the heater core.
4. Remove the throttle body. Use a good throttle body cleaner. You will have to put some effort into cleaning the TB. Watch the IAC valve.
5. Just drop the pan and replace the fluid/filter. You don't know what has been done in the past and could create a new set of problems. DO it again in a few miles if you want.
