Default 1997 Dakota

My ABS and Brake light have come on and my brakes look fine. What else could cause this?

Faulty sensor, wiring, tone ring.

If the ABS light is on you should have a stored code. Find someplace where they can read ABS codes - not something a typical scanner can do.

The most common cause of this is either low brake fluid, or faulty ABS sensor in the rear diff. It's easier to tell the ABS sensor as your speedometer will not work until ~35mph, when the transmission speed sensor takes over. It's located ontop of the rear diff and held on with one bolt/nut combo, very easy to change. You can also check your ABS fuse to make sure it's not blown.

My dakota randomly has the ABS/Brake lights on, yet I can stop, turn the truck off, wait a minute, start it back up, and they're off again. Otherwise, find someone who can scan ABS codes, usually it'll take a real OBD2 computer and not a 'scan tool'.

My Dakota was doing that I replaced the wiring harness to the rear dif sensor and it went away. I had to buy the sensor with the harness included with it in order to get it but only replaced the harness. Speedo worked fine the whole time just had abs and brake light coming on
