Default temperature gauge weirdness

the last couple days my temperature gauge has been saying my coolant temp is way high.. and the warning message to check the gauges has dinged in.....

it has happened today... the needle went over the normal range hash marks and the warning came on.... I got home and parked the truck for 45 minutes or so... and then went out, started the truck up and drove the same distance as before, but the guage was fine....

no codes showing.... could this be a faulty sending unit?

2004 3.7 dodge 4wd, 4d

thanks

1) This may be better in the Gen2 or Gen3 forum, since the Gen1 was done in 1996 (and earlier)

2) Check coolant levels; if you get an air bubble, you may get this.

3) Did you check with an IR thermometer to see how hot the motor (especially the thermostat housing) and the radiator really were?

4) Don't keep driving it like that! Unless you just want to replace the motor ...

One of the best investments I made is the Torque Pro app for 5 bucks (you can use the free version, but I wanted the whole access) and a 12 dollar OBD 2 bluetooth adapter. It will tell you the code and you can clear it all with the app. I have it set up on my tablet and I donīt even look at my instrument gauges anymore, it will show fuel level, speed from ECU as well as GPS, coolant temp (I use the digital display on this so I get an actual number instead of a needle and line), battery voltage, and many other values that are important.
I just used it to help a co-worker diagnose his chevy trailblazer( he was showing a random misfire code, with the app we were able to watch all cylinders fire and it showed misfire counts for each cylinder, found out number 5 was the culprit). Well worth it in my opinion.

I'm the same way with my Ultra-gauge. I have everything I need on it, I don't look at the cluster.
