Default LIMP IN Please help

I have a 98 Dakota, 5.2l 4x4. Automatic trans, although I am not certain as to the exact model it. Anyhow, it is "limping in" and I am not sure what to do about it. We have checked out the ECU, and gotten the trans serviced. All of the gears are there, but it is starting out in third, and you have to do this little song and dance where you have to go from reverse and then slam it all the way down into first. Thanks for the help.

Replace the electronics in the trans. Governor pressure sensor, and solenoid. Get the heavy duty Borg Warner unit. Several vendors on EBay have 'em, for around 100 bucks.
