Default Fan Clutch or something else

Hello,

I've asked your guys help several times on this forum about my 2000 Dodge Dakota.

Here is what I have....

1) The truck seems to shake constantly .....a noticeable vibration.

2) Roaring sound when in stop and go traffic. Sounds like an airplane taking off.

3) Engine seems to lose power and has problem accelerating during the loud roaring sound. It seems to lose HP.

4) Once again during the engine roaring sound it seems to slip a little and not change gears smoothly.

5) Truck has no problems with overheating at all.

I've read multiple things online and I'm trying to pinpoint this. Some sources say the fan clutch can be all the things above and can be misdiagnosed as transmission issues. In my case I really hope it is just the fan clutch and not any problems stemming from the transmission.

From my understanding I'll need a special wrench to remove the fan clutch and it doesn't seem to be an overly hard or expensive thing to replace so I am thinking about just replacing it and seeing if it the problems go away.

Some websites state to test the fan by turning it. I have rotating it multiple times and it spins freely with no resistance. When the engine turns on it spins around immediately but the roaring noise isn't noticeable until it randomly starts happening during stop and go driving or when first starting out with a cold engine....

Your thoughts?

When the engine is stone cold, the fan should turn fairly easily. When the engine is fully warmed up, you should feel some resistance......

if you just want to replace it....... I didn't use the special tool, I just put a big wrench on the nut for the fan, smacked it with a hammer, and it came right off. (leave the belt in place.)

yep, 38mm as I recall. Leave the belt on, big wrench (or crescent wrench), and 2 or 3 whacks with a heavy hammer
