When im in 2wd everything is fine. But when I go into 4 wheel holy CRAP! It sounds like a sledge hammer is hitting under there...I don't even know where to start and am trying g to avoid paying a ton to find out. Please help if u have any advice or tips how to narrow this down so I can get it fixed. I'm in snow in dangerous conditio. Thanks guys God Bless

 

Hi I'm here for help... Don't mean to be the guy just asking for things but I am 27 and don't know about trucks at all and am having major trouble with my only commuter. It's a 2001 dakota 4.7 mag and the 4we is majorly having issues. Extremely loud and violent in sequence as I move forward in 4w. No probs at all in 2wd but man, it's VERY VERY loud in 4. Welcome to the forum. Please don't double post. I merged the two threads.

Does this happen on dry pavement or with poor traction, like in snow or mud? MOST Dakota's are not equipped to be driven in 4wd on dry pavement. It depends upon your transfer case.

What does the selector show for positions?

 

if what your describing is accurate, then it sounds to me like your transfer case chain is stretched ( BIG TIME)
and its actually trying to jump the teeth inside the case( not good) ..you can check the slop in the chain, put truck in 4wd,
jack the front wheels off the ground, grab the front output yoke of the TC and rotate ,should only have a little back and forth movement...
