Default 2001 Dakota needs a new computer

Hello everyone,

First post here. I just got my first truck (a 2001 dakota) a couple days ago and it's got over 200k miles and needs lots of work including a new computer I'd like to learn and do as many of the repairs on this vehicle myself as I can so I'm hoping the experienced folks here could point me in the right direction...

My first repair is to replace the PCM. The shop is quoting me $700 but I've seen some online that are roughly $200 - $300 and it looks like all you have to do is plug the new computer in for the most part. Do any of you have any experience with this repair and is there anything I should keep in mind? Do these new computers need to be programmed after installation? Do you have a recommended source for purchasing these computers?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

You can get one from your local auto parts store for 2-300 bucks, and it should come pre-programmed to your VIN, (which you will have to provide for them.) Then it's just a matter of swapping them out. Couple bolts, couple electrical connectors, and you are done.

Ok thanks for the reply. I called NAPA and they said I had to take it to the dealership after installing the new computer and get it "flashed". The dealership quoted $140 for this service.
