Default Transmission or other problem?

1999 Dodge Dakota SLT 3.9, Automatic Trans, Rear Wheel Drive.
This morning while starting to take off at a traffic light it felt like someone had hit me in the back end and made loud noise underneath like something fell off. Truck would not move while in gear, got out to push the truck out of the highway and it would not roll forward in neutral but would roll backwards. Just had transmission rebuilt a few months ago. Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Rear end, u joint, transmission. Inspect underneath for obvious things.

Thanks, jkeaton.
Had it towed to an Auto Service Shop, after first inspection on the outside of the shop it was reported that it seems something broke in the rear axle assembly but will not know for sure what exactly it is until they can get the truck into the shop and get inside the assembly.

Broke two teeth off the ring I bet. Will roll backwards on the coast side of the tooth, but not forward on the thrust side.

Thanks, magnethead
That is exactly what a friend of mine told me was the probable cause.
When I find out for sure the cause I will post.
Thanks again.

typically if you break a tooth on the ring, it will roll. If you break 2, it will not. If you break 1 off the pinion, it will roll. If you break 2, it will lock up solid. Think you broke a tooth on the ring and chipped half a tooth on one or the other.

Here is what the problem was, the pinion broke in two at the shaft.
Replaced was, new pinion and ring, bearing kit and friction modifier.

Yep, the person that repaired it for me stated the same, said first time ever saw that as it was usually the ring, as you stated in your earlier post.
