Default Temp gauge acting wierd

Ok for the past couple of days my 01 4.7l dakota has been running fine but my temp gauge shoots right up to the first line on the gauge while the engine is still cold. This has never happened before and have no clue what would be cause this. Does anyone have any idea what i should check to find out what is causing this?
