Default 97 Dakota 5.2 camshaft??? Pull torque

Hey all. I am rebuilding my 5.2 to put in my rebuilding 97 Dakota extended cab. I’m looking at putting a cam in that might give a little better torque power. I pull a trailer and couple ATVs that combined is about 4000 pounds. I go west to the Rockies as well as the applications in the east. Has the roller cam. Everything else in the motor but block is new. Is the stock cam enough? Or should I upgrade? If I should upgrade what numbers am I looking for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you have one you want to sell let me know.

Thanks
demnis

If you change the cam, you will also need a custom tune for it to run properly. An easier upgrade, is to install the Harland Sharp 1.7 ratio roller rockers. Direct bolt in, no custom tune needed.

Moving this to second gen dakota section as well.

Just about anywhere that sells performance parts. Jegs, Summit, etc.

For OP's situation, a tune itself would not be a bad idea. >> https://www.frptuning.com/ is who I use ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/flyi...scussiongroup/ )

Are the stock heads being replaced by EQ's? Who built the engine? If the block has been decked more than a light shave and you're using a non-stock or non-EQ reproduction head, you're going to have custom valvetrain anyways. Throwing a good cam in is a good idea at that point.

My heads are stock remans. Pretty much everything is stock at this point but bored 30 and 30 over pistons. I have a machine shop that builds race car engines (Griffs engines and machine shop) do the block. I’m putting it together myself. Been about 30 years since I’ve built one, but I know I can. Just wanted to get a little more torque to pull my four wheelers.

Get in on the discussion or email Ryan directly- ryan@frptuning.com . He has a specific cam P/N that you can take to 2 different cam companies depending on what setup you want.
