Default 2002 Dakota third brake light

New to this forum, and a quick search of topics did not show anything previously, so please forgive me if I am rehashing old information. I have a 2002 base Dakota with 5 speed manual transmission in fair shape that I am rehabing a weekend at a time. I am keeping most everything stock but I wanted to upgrade from a simple third brake light to a combo LED third brake light and cargo light. Unfortunately I do not have a cargo light on the light switch - above the dimmer roller it only says dome, and others switches I have seen indicate both dome/cargo on the switch. Does anyone have any experience with this upgrade? I can plug in a combo cargo/brake light, but the cargo light stays on all the time, I am assuming I need a new switch with the cargo option, and some additional wiring. I would appreciate any thoughts from this group. Thanks in advance.

Not sure on the '02, I'm looking at an '01 but they almost identical.

Do you have a pink and pink with dark blue wires at the cargo lamp? Pink would be hot, 12v, all the time. The dark blue is the switched lead (sinks to ground) - but this is the problem, It's switched by the CTM, not the headlamp switch itself.

The base CTM may not have the outputs for the cargo lamp.

00DakDan, thanks for the information. To keep things simple I am just going to replace the third brake light for now. Maybe look into a CTM upgrade in the future is there is enough reason to. Gives me something more to research. Have you ever done a CTM upgrade?
Again, thanks.

It may be a programming issue with the CTM, earlier models did list a "base" model.

"cargo lamp driver" does show on the wiring diagram. Pin #3 on Connector #2 - a pink with dark blue tracer wire.

I found out about this issue when I purchased a third brake light with cargo light capability. I then ordered a (so I was told) simple third brake light, but it also has cargo lights that will not go out. I would appreciate any suggestions as to where I can order a simple third brake light. Thanks in advance.

Don't know if you have tow hitch wiring. I have a cheap Harbor Freight LED brake light attached to mine.
