Default IAC stays extended when cold

Hello all. I am having trouble with my 97 dodge dakota 3.9L. The plunger on the IAC is all the way extended when the engine is cold causing it to not get air and not stay running unless I keep on the gas. I have replaced it three times so I am sure its not the IAC itself. Any ideas on what would cause this?

No codes. Spark and fuel is fine. It will run if i manually push the piston back on the iac. I don't see any air leaks but I did read that would cause the condition.

Verify you are getting 12 volts on the IAC connector on TWO wires.

That is correct.

Reinstall the IAC. Disconnect the battery for a while, to reset the PCM. Hook it all back up, turn the ignition to 'on', (not start) count to ten. (don't touch anything) THEN start the truck. See if it doesn't straighten up, and fly right.

I put an aftermarket IAC in my 96 Ram, and had intermittent stalling issues. Replaced it with a mopar unit, all problems gone........

I agree some sensors are brand sensitive.
RESET system/ecm.

Be sure its seal / o ring is good too.
Maybe get a mopar one off same truck to see what it does .if problem is still there .after reset.

The IAC has an o-ring if not thats your problem or you have an air leak thats the only reason it would be extended like that.
