Default Replacing the clutch pack in a 9.25 without removing the casing?

I saw some guy post a comment on a YouTube video saying he replaced the clutches without removing the casing.
the only way I can see this being possible is if maybe you had a really long extension or series of extensions and maybe be able to get a socket and bolt and washer down the axle tube into the side gears and put the nut and socket on the inside and compress the clutches enough that way to get the spider gears out and back in. Would this be possible?
also is there a reason I see everyone remove the ring gear off the casing before taking the clutches out, is this necessary?

The earth can't possibly be flat. If it were, cats would have knocked everything off the edge by now.
